Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Abscess Sinusitis Tooth

 
Sinusitis is caused by a bacteria blockage in the sinus cavity.  When the inflammation in the sinuses, caused by a cold, allergies, or even an abscess tooth, has bacteria that attacks the cavity walls, greater inflammation is caused and the bacteria become trapped.  The mucus can no longer be washed out by way of the cilia, and sinusitis begins.  When someone has a tooth abscess, it can cause many secondary complications, sinusitis being one of them.  Sinusitis may occur from a tooth abscess when the infection from the tooth spreads since the nasal and mouth areas are connected. 

 
The main treatment for an abscess tooth is a root canal and antibiotics for the infection.  Antibiotics work with an abscess tooth, but they do not work quite as well in the treatment of sinusitis.  There are a very few amount of blood vessels in the nasal cavities, and there for it is difficult a sufficient amount of antibiotic to get to the sinus infection.  Another common treatment for sinusitis is nasal sprays.  With nasal sprays, it is also difficult for a sufficient amount to travel into the sinus cavity, due to the large particle size of the nasal spray medication.  Sinus surgery is usually a last resort for sinus patients.  It is often times painful, and doesn’t clear up all of the inflammation.  Often patients will receive sinus surgery more than once.
