Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis as an inflammatory condition of the sinus cavities and their opening.  Swelling often occurs with a cold or allergies.  When this swelling gets attacked by bacteria, more swelling occurs in the sinus cavity and the opening, and then the bacteria and mucus become trapped, and the infection begins.  Because of the blockage, the mucus and bacteria cannot be washed out by way of the cilia.  There are many symptoms of sinusitis such as congestion, facial pain, and headache.  At nighttime, symptoms such as cough and nasal discharge may be worse. 

 
There are many treatments for sinusitis.  Actifed medications contain antihistamines and decongestants to treat minor allergies.  These medications may be used also at nighttime.  Unfortunately, these medications are only used to help allergies and not sinusitis.  Nasal sprays are also often used.  Nasal sprays can only help the lower part of the sinuses since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation and into the sinus cavities.  Oral antibiotics are also frequently used.  Antibiotics work by flowing through the blood stream to the area of infection.  The sinus cavities only have few blood vessels, so therefore not an efficient amount of medication can be distributed to the sinusitis infection.
