Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Acute Sinusitis Problems Symptoms

 

            Sinusitis is an inflammation condition in the sinus cavities.  Sinusitis begins when a person has a cold or allergy which causes swelling of the sinus cavity lining.  When bacteria get into the sinuses and attack the already swollen cavity lining, greater inflammation occurs, causing bacteria and mucus to become trapped.  When this amount of inflammation occurs, the cilia can no longer flush out the bacteria and mucus, the sinusitis infection begins.  When the sinusitis lasts for less than twelve weeks, it is considered acute sinusitis.  Some of the symptoms that a person may have with acute sinusitis are cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip.

 

            There are many treatments for acute sinusitis along with other forms of sinusitis and their symptoms.  One frequently prescribed treatment for sinusitis is oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on many types of infections by traveling through the blood stream to the infected area.  One of the problems with using oral antibiotics in the sinus cavities are that there are very few blood vessels, so it is difficult for an efficient amount of the medication to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.  Additional problems that a person may experience with oral antibiotics are abdominal pain and urinary tract infections.  Nasal sprays are also frequently used though they may only offer relief to the lower part of the sinuses since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinuses cavities and up to the sinusitis infection.
