Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Aerosolized Sinusitis Therapy

 

            Sinusitis is an inflammation condition of the sinus cavities.  A sinusitis infection begins when a person has a cold or allergy, which causes inflammation of the sinus cavity lining.  When bacteria enter the sinus cavities and attack the swollen lining, more inflammation occurs causing the cilia to no longer flush out the trapped bacteria and mucus and the sinusitis infection begins.  Some of the many symptoms that a person may experience with sinusitis are cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip.  When the sinusitis lasts for twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic and may have additional symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell, and the person may become fatigued.

 

            There are many forms of treatment for sinusitis.  Oftentimes a person may try using nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays may only offer relief to the lower part of the sinuses since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the cavities and up to the sinusitis infection and therefore relief will not take place.  Another common treatment is oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on infections by flowing through the blood stream to the infected area.  In the sinus cavities though, there are few blood vessels so it is difficult for an efficient amount of medication to be delivered.  One newer form of treatment is aerosolized sinusitis treatment.  Aerosolized sinusitis treatment works by delivering medications strait into the sinus cavities.
