Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy Sinusitis

 

Sinusitis is an inflammatory condition of the paranasal sinuses.  Sinusitis takes place when the openings to the sinuses become obstructed and bacteria and mucus become trapped in the sinus cavity.  The cilia usually washes out the bacteria and mucus, but when the sinus cavity opening is obstructed that bacteria multiply and attack the cavity lining causing more inflammation.  An allergy, which generally initiates the swelling, is when the body reacts excessively to allergens such as pollen, dander, and mold.  When a patient gets a “hay fever” allergy, it affects the sinuses.  Common symptoms of sinusitis are postnasal drip, cough, green nasal discharge, and facial pressure. 

 

There are many different prescribed and over the counter medications to treat allergies.  There are also a variety of medications to fight sinusitis and its symptoms.  Physicians usually will try antibiotics to fight sinusitis.  Antibiotics work on infections by flowing through the blood stream to the area of infection.  In the sinuses there are very few blood vessels; therefore a successful amount of medication cannot be delivered.  Another form of treatment for a sinusitis is nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays have difficulty working on sinusitis due to their large particle size not being able to get past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and into the sinusitis infection.  Surgery is also an option for sinusitis infection patients.  Surgery is painful, and often times are just a temporary relief, since the doctor only removes part of the inflammation, and therefore the infection usually will return.
