Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Frontal Sinusitis Symptom

 

            Sinusitis is a condition caused by an obstruction of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities.  When bacteria get into the sinus cavities and attack the swollen cavity lining, which is usually caused by a cold or allergy, greater inflammation begins causing the cilia to not be able to flush out the bacteria and mucus, causing the sinusitis infection.  There are many symptoms of a sinusitis infection which may include postnasal drip, green nasal discharge, facial pain and pressure, cough, and congestion.  The frontal sinuses are located between the eyes and behind the forehead.  When a person has a frontal sinusitis infection, they may also have a headache in the forehead as a symptom.  One symptom that they may also experience is upper tooth pain due to the pressure from the inflammation on the nerves.

 

            There are many treatments for sinusitis.  Frequently a physician may prescribe oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on infections by traveling through the blood stream to the infected area.  The sinus cavities contain only a small amount of blood vessels therefore an efficient amount of oral antibiotic cannot be delivered to the sinusitis infection.  Nasal sprays are also commonly prescribed or purchased over the counter.  The problem with nasal sprays however is that they have a large particle size that cannot make it past the inflammation at the opening of the cavities and up to the sinusitis infection.  Sinus surgery is usually a last option and it is usually painful and only offers temporary relief since the physician only removes a portion of the inflammation and infection, so the sinusitis usually returns.
