Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Maxillary Sinusitis Symptom

 

 

            Sinusitis is a condition which is caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities.  When a person has a cold or allergy, the sinus cavity lining becomes swollen.  When bacteria get into the cavities and attack the already swollen cavity lining, greater inflammation occurs, which caused the cilia to no longer flush out the bacteria and mucus, and the sinusitis infection begins.  A person may experience cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip as a symptom.  When the sinusitis occurs in the maxillary sinuses, which are located beneath the cheeks and to the sides of the nose, a person may also have upper tooth pain, pain in the cheeks, and pressure in the eyes as a symptom.

 

            There are many treatment forms for maxillary sinusitis and other forms of sinusitis.  Frequently a physician may prescribe oral antibiotics for many types of infections which works by traveling through the blood stream to the area of infection.  The problem however, with using oral antibiotics in sinusitis infections are that there are very few blood vessels in the sinus cavities, there for it is difficult for an effective amount of medication to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.  Over the counter and prescribed nasal sprays are also commonly used treatments for sinusitis.  The problem with nasal sprays though are that they may only offer relief to the lower part of the sinuses since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection.
