Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Pilonidal Sinusitis


Sinusitis is an infection caused by a bacteria blockage in the sinus cavities.  This infection occurs when swelling exists from a cold or allergy, and bacteria attack this already swollen lining, causing a larger amount of inflammation.  The bacteria and mucus can no longer be washed out by way of the cilia, since the opening to the cavities is so inflamed, and the bacteria and mucus become trapped, causing the infection.  A pilonidal cyst or sinus is an abscess or usually located at the end of the tail bone.  The symptoms of a pilonidal cyst are infection and reoccurrence.  Sinusitis symptoms include cough, congestion, post-nasal drip, facial pain, and headache.

The standard treatment for a pilonidal sinusitis is antibiotics and then once the infection is better, surgery is done and the cyst is drained.  Sinusitis is commonly also treated with oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work by traveling though the blood stream to the area of infection.  In the sinus cavities though, there are only a small amount of blood vessels, so a valuable amount of medication cannot be delivered to the infection.  Prescribed and over the counter nasal sprays are also a commonly used treatment.  Nasal sprays however, have a large particle so an effective amount of medication cannot be delivered to the sinusitis infection.
