Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Severe Sinusitis Infection


Sinusitis is caused by inflammation in the sinus cavity and it’s opening.  When a person gets a cold or allergy, swelling of the cavity lining comes about.  When bacteria get into the sinuses, they attack the already swollen lining which causes more inflammation, making it difficult for the bacteria and mucus to be washed out by way of the cilia, and the infection begins.  Normal symptoms of a sinusitis infection are congestion, cough, facial pain, and green nasal discharge.  When a severe infection occurs, it is considered chronic and has lasted for at least twelve weeks.  Symptoms of a severe sinusitis infection are loss of sense of taste and smell and a person may become fatigued.

Oftentimes with sinusitis and severe sinusitis, a physician may prescribe oral antibiotics or steroids.  These oral medications work by traveling through the blood stream to the area of infection.  In the sinuses however, there are very few blood vessels, making it difficult for a sufficient amount of medication to be delivered to that area.  Other times a patient may use a prescribed or over the counter nasal spray.  Nasal sprays may only help the lower part of the sinus cavity, since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinuses, therefore it cannot arrive in the sinus cavity where the infection is.  Also if a patient uses nasal sprays for more than a few days, more inflammation may occur.
