Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Sinusitis Allergy Infection

 

Sinusitis allergy infections begin when a person has an allergy, but instead of the normal inflammation that takes place, the walls of the sinus cavity and the openings in to the sinuses become more swollen, and bacteria is trapped inside, causing the infection.  Normally, the bacteria that gets into the sinuses is swept out by the cilia.  However, when the bacteria is trapped and attacks the lining of the sinuses, the opening in to the sinus cavity becomes so inflamed that the blood vessels leak fluid that causes more swelling, and the bacteria cannot be washed out by the bodies natural action of doing so.  Sinusitis allergy infections have many symptoms such as post-nasal drip, facial pain, headache, congestion, and green nasal discharge.
