Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Causes 

 

When a person has a cold or allergy the walls of the sinus cavities become swollen.  Bacteria sometimes will sometimes get into the cavities and attack the already swollen cavity lining which as a result causes greater inflammation.  The bacteria and mucus then can no longer be flushed out by way of the cilia, and the sinusitis begins.  There are many symptoms of sinusitis which usually include congestion, cough, postnasal drip, green nasal discharge, and facial pain and pressure.  The pressure of the inflammation pushing on the nerves causes headaches which also may be a symptom.  When the sinusitis infection lasts from twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic and can also receive new symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell and the person may become fatigued.

 

There are several treatments for sinusitis. Frequently physicians will prescribe oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work by traveling through the blood stream to the area of infection.  Oral antibiotics work great on many types of infections but in the sinus cavities there are only a small amount of blood vessels so an effective amount of the medication cannot be delivered.  Also, sometimes an antibiotic causes stomach pain and urinary tract infections.  Nasal sprays are also often used though they only way offer relief to the lower part of the sinus cavities since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to where the infection is.
