Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinusitis Disease

Sinusitis is caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities.  Sinusitis starts with a cold or allergy usually, which creates inflammation in the sinus cavity and it’s opening.  When bacteria get into the sinus cavities, they attack the already swollen lining, causing greater inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity, and bacteria and mucus cannot be washed out by way of the cilia as normal.  Certain kinds of disease may also cause sinusitis.  Diseases such as Kartagener's syndrome, immotile cilia syndrome, and cystic fibrosis cause the cilia to not function correctly.   Gastroesophageal reflux disease also has been known to contribute to sinusitis.  Symptoms of sinusitis include congestion, green nasal discharge, postnasal drip, cough, and facial pressure.

Many people take oral antibiotics to relieve sinusitis and its symptoms.  Oral antibiotics work by traveling in the blood stream to the area of infection.  Oral antibiotics do not work well in sinusitis because there is a limited amount of blood cells in the sinus cavities.  Nasal sprays are also often used.  Nasal sprays may help the lower area of the sinuses, but their large particle size cannot make it through the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity, and therefore cannot make it up to the sinusitis infection.  Surgery is also used as a last option.  During the sinus surgery, the doctor only removed part of the inflammation, so there is a good chance that infection will come back, and it usually does.  Many patients end up having multiple sinus surgeries in their lifetime.

Sinus Dynamics is the most innovative form of treatment for sinusitis.  Sinus Dynamics antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and anti-fungals are used in a nebulized form, making it simple for the 3.2 micron particles to make their way through the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity, and strait to the sinusitis infection.  Sinus Dynamics nebulized antibiotics are much more effective than oral antibiotics since they are directly nebulized into the sinusitis infection.  There are little to no side effects since a small amount of Sinus Dynamics topical medication is used.  Sinus Dynamics has a 98% success rate in patients, which clearly shows that it is the safest and most successful treatment for sinusitis.
