Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Headaches


Sinusitis a condition which is caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities.  When a person has a cold or allergy, swelling occurs on the sinus cavity lining.  When bacteria get in the sinuses and attack the lining, immense inflammation takes place, and the bacteria and mucus can no longer be washed out by way of the cilia since the opening to the cavities is so inflamed.  There are several symptoms of sinusitis which include post-nasal drip, cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, and green nasal discharge.  Headaches are also a common symptom of sinusitis.  The headaches are caused when the inflammation from the sinuses puts pressure on the nerves.

Sinusitis headaches are not like normal headaches so any pain reliever taken for it may only offer temporary relief since the inflammation will still exist, and therefore the headache will most likely come back.  The sinusitis needs to be treated to get the headaches to stop.  There are many treatments for sinusitis.  Nasal sprays are often used though are generally ineffective in treating anything past the lower sinuses since its particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities.  Oral antibiotics are also commonly prescribed and also generally ineffective in treating sinusitis.  Oral antibiotics work by traveling though the blood stream to the area of infection but in the sinus cavities there are only a small amount of blood vessels so it is difficult for an efficient amount of medication to be delivered.
