Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Home Remedy

 

            Sinusitis is a condition caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities.  When there is existing swelling of the sinus cavity walls, usually from a cold or allergy, which becomes attacked by bacteria, greater inflammation occurs.  Because of this amount of inflammation, the cilia can no longer wash out the trapped bacteria and mucus and so the sinusitis infection begins.  There are several symptoms of sinusitis which may include postnasal drip, cough, green nasal discharge, facial pain and pressure, and congestion.  If the sinusitis lasts for twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic and can have added symptoms which may include loss of sense of taste and smell and the patient may become fatigued. 

 

            There are many treatment forms for sinusitis.  Many people may use a home remedy.  One such home remedy is inhaling hot steam which is meant to moisten the mucus in the sinus cavity.  Though the hot steam may offer some relief, this home remedy will not cure the sinusitis and they symptoms will return.  The home remedy of putting a hot compress on the area that is inflamed will also only offer temporary relief since heat itself will not kill bacteria.  There are also many home remedy herbs and oils which are sometimes tried to heal the sinusitis.  There is really no explaination on why most of these would help, but once again they do not kill the bacteria so the infection will stay.
