Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinusitis Infection Drainage

Sinusitis is an infection caused by inflammation in the sinus cavities.  When swelling exists, usually due to a cold or allergy, bacteria sometimes become trapped, attacking the swollen cavity lining, causing more inflammation in the cavities and their opening.  Normally the cilia drain the mucus out of the cavities, but when the inflammation blocks the cavity opening, this cannot happen.  Symptoms of a sinusitis infection are congestion, cough, facial pain, and posterior pharyngeal drainage.  When the sinusitis infection lasts for twelve weeks or more, it is considered chronic.  Added symptoms that a person may experience are being fatigued and loss of sense of smell and taste.

There are many treatments for sinusitis infections.  Commonly physicians prescribe oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on infections by traveling though the blood stream to the infected area.  Oral antibiotics aren’t usually effective in treating sinusitis since there are a limited amount of blood vessels in the sinus cavities.  Prescribed and over the counter nasal sprays are also often tried.  Nasal sprays have a very large particle size, which makes it difficult for it to get past the inflammation at the opening of the cavities, and into the infection.  Sometimes doctors will also try sinus surgery.  One such surgery is done by puncturing a hole at the area of infection, so infection drainage can occur.  Oftentimes surgery is painful and unsuccessful, causing the infection to return.

Sinus Dynamics is the most innovative technology in the treatment of sinusitis.  The Sinus Dynamics program uses nebulized antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and anti-fungals.  Because of the 3.2-micron size, Sinus Dynamics medications can easily work through the inflammation and make it into the sinus cavities, where the infection lies.  There are also little to no side effects with Sinus Dynamics medications since they are topical, and a very little amount of medication is used.  Sinus Dynamics nebulized therapy is safe and effective with a 98% success rate.
