Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Infection Guaifenesin

 
Sinusitis is an inflammatory condition of the sinus cavities.  A sinusitis infection develops when the openings to the sinuses become inflamed due to a cold or allergy, and bacteria attack the sinus cavity walls, causing more inflammation and trapping the bacteria and mucus inside.  The bacteria cannot be washed out by way of the cilia, due to the sinus cavities opening being swollen.  Symptoms of a sinusitis infection include facial pressure, nasal congestion, drainage of green mucus, and cough.    When a sinusitis infection lasts more than twelve weeks, it is considered chronic.  The same symptoms can continue and patients may become fatigued.  Some medications may also cause sinus infections such as aspirin and topical nasal decongestants. 

 

There are several different treatment forms for a sinusitis infection.  Oral antibiotics are a commonly used treatment.  Oral antibiotics work in the blood stream to get to the area of infection.  In the sinuses however, there are very few blood vessels, and therefore it is difficult for the antibiotic to get to the sinusitis infection.  Nasal sprays also have difficulties getting to the infection because their large particle size cannot make it though the inflamed opening to arrive to the sinus cavities and the sinusitis infection.  Another form of treatment is a medication in tablet form called Guaifenesin.  Guaifenesin may help some sinusitis infection symptoms by thining the mucus in the air passages and making it easier to break up and to cough out.  This medication however, will only help few symptoms and not clear up the sinusitis infection.  It also as side effects such as headache and vomiting.
