Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Infection Steroid Nasal Spray

 

 A sinusitis infection in an inflammatory condition in the sinus cavities and their opening.  When a patient has a cold or allergy, inflammation on the sinus cavity lining occurs.  When bacteria get into the cavity and attack the lining, more swelling takes place and as a result, the bacteria and mucus become trapped, causing the sinusitis infection.  A patient with a sinusitis infection may experience congestion, post nasal drip, headache, facial pain, and green nasal discharge.  When the sinusitis infection becomes chronic (lasts more than twelve weeks), a person may also have added symptoms such as fatigue and loss of sense of taste and sense of smell.  

 

There are quite a few different treatment forms for a sinusitis infection.  Many times a person may try steroid nasal sprays.  Steroid nasal sprays are used to temporarily relieve the swelling in the nose.  Steroid nasal sprays also require weeks of use before experiencing any relief.  Steroid nasal sprays however, do not have a large enough particle size to make it though the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity, and into the sinuses.  Another form of treatment is oral antibiotics.  Antibiotics work on infection by going through the blood stream.  In the sinus cavities there are very few blood cells, so it is difficult for the oral antibiotics to do their job.  Also since the antibiotics travel though the blood stream, a patient may experience many side effects.
