Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Sinusitis Infection Surgery

 
A sinusitis infection occurs when inflammation of the cavity walls, which is usually due to a cold or allergies, becomes attacked by bacteria and more inflammation occurs.  When this amount of swelling occurs, it causes the bacteria and mucus to become trapped inside the sinus cavities, and the infection happens.  Usually the cilia washes out mucus and bacteria, but when the opening to the sinus cavities becomes as inflamed as it does with the bacteria, nothing can be washed out.  Symptoms that may occur are headache, facial pressure, green nasal discharge, postnasal drip, and congestion.  Loss of sense of taste and smell may occur when the sinusitis infection lasts for more then twelve weeks, in which it is considered chronic.

 

There are many treatment forms for sinusitis infections.  A physician may use sinusitis infection surgery as a last resort, once all other means of treatment have failed.  When a doctor performs sinus surgery, they remove some of the inflammation and infection in the sinus cavities.  Sinus surgery is painful and usually only effective for a short time since some of the infection was left in the sinus cavities.  Often times patients will have to receive sinus surgery more than once in their lifetime.  Other means of treatment that a doctor may try before surgery are antibiotics, which are often ineffective due to the small amount of blood vessels in the sinus cavity, and nasal sprays, which don’t always work because their large particle size cannot make it through the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities.
