Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Infection and Asthma Symptoms

 
Sinusitis is caused by inflammation, usually from allergies or a cold that get attacked by bacteria, which causes more swelling.  When the opening to the sinus cavity becomes swollen, a blockage occurs and the bacteria and mucus become trapped and cannot be washed out by way of the cilia.  Sinusitis has numerous symptoms such as cough, facial pain, green nasal discharge, and headache.  Another common symptom is postnasal drip.  Postnasal drip irritates a person’s asthma when it drips into the airway, which may make the asthma hard to control.  The postnasal drip may also contain bacteria, which also may bring on an asthma attack.  Postnasal drip occurs due to the accumulating mucus in the sinuses.

 

Asthma has many treatment forms such as inhalers, oral medications, and nebulized medications.  There are also several forms of treatment for sinusitis which may reduce the postnasal drip.  Oral antibiotics are prescribed often by physicals.  Oral antibiotics work to fight many infections by traveling in the blood stream to the infected area.  The sinus cavities however, have very few blood vessels, so oral antibiotics often are unsuccessful.  Nasal sprays which can be prescribed or purchased over the counter are also often used.  Nasal sprays have a large particle size and have difficulty getting past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity, and are unable to travel up to the sinusitis infection.  Nasal sprays may only clear the lower sinus area.
