Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Sinusitis Infection and Bronchitis Symptoms

 

A sinusitis infection is caused by a blockage in the sinus cavities and the opening into them.  The blockage occurs when bacteria attack inflammation, which is caused by a cold or allergies, causing more inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity and in the cavity, trapping bacteria and mucus inside, resulting in infection.  Bronchitis is a similar condition in the fact that is also is an inflammation condition, except the swelling is of the lining of the bronchial tubes instead of the sinuses.  Similar symptoms between sinusitis infections and bronchitis are cough and mucus production.  A sinusitis infection has other symptoms such as congestion, facial pain, and green nasal discharge.  Bronchitis has added symptoms such as difficulty breathing and pain behind the breast bone.

 

Oral antibiotics are commonly used to treat both a sinusitis infection and bronchitis.  Antibiotics work by traveling through the blood stream to the area of infection.  In sinusitis infections though, there are very few blood vessels in the sinuses and therefore the antibiotic cannot fully work on the infection.  Another form of treatment for a sinusitis infection is nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays have difficulty working in a sinusitis infection due to their large particle size not being able to get past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and into the sinusitis infection.  Surgery is also an option for sinusitis infection patients.  Surgery is painful, and often times are just a temporary relief, since the doctor only removes part of the inflammation, and therefore the infection usually will return.
