Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Nasal Treatment



    Sinusitis is a condition which appears after a person develops existing inflammation from a cold or allergy.  When the already swollen nasal cavity lining becomes attacked by bacteria, greater inflammation occurs causing the cilia to no longer be able to flush out the bacteria and mucus and therefore they become a blockage, causing the infection.  There are numerous symptoms of sinusitis which may include cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip.  When the sinusitis infection lasts for twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic and can have additional symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell and the person may become fatigued.         


    There are several forms of treatment for sinusitis.  One common treatment is prescribed or over the counter nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays may only offer relief to the lower part to the sinuses since its particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the nasal cavity and up to the sinusitis infection.  Oral antibiotics are also frequently prescribed.  Oral antibiotics are also a frequently used treatment that works by traveling through the blood stream to the area of infection.  In the sinus and nasal cavities however, there are only a small amount of blood vessels so it is difficult for an effect amount of medication to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.
