Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Pain


Sinusitis is an inflammation condition of the sinus cavities.  When swelling occurs from a cold or allergy, bacteria may get into the cavities and attack the swollen cavity lining causing more inflammation.  Bacteria and mucus then become trapped because they can no longer be washed out by way of the cilia since the opening to the cavities is so inflamed.  There are many different symptoms of sinusitis which include congestion, post-nasal drip, cough, and facial pain.  Other pain may also occur such as head pain and upper tooth pain.

Sinusitis has many diverse forms of treatment.  One of the most common treatments is oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on infections when they enter the blood stream and move through it to the area of infection.  Oral antibiotics work on many infections, but in the sinuses, there are a small amount of blood vessels so it is difficult for an effective amount of medication to be distributed into the sinusitis infection.  Nasal sprays are often used and can be prescribed of purchased over the counter.  Nasal sprays do not always work effectively due to their large particle size.  It is difficult for the large particles to travel past the sinus cavity opening because of the inflammation.  Surgery is also an option but there is usually a lot a pain and the infection generally returns.
