Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Sinusitis Steroid Nasal Spray

 

             Sinusitis is an inflammatory condition of the sinus cavities and their openings.  When a person has a cold or allergy, swelling of the sinus cavity lining occurs.  When bacteria get into the sinus cavities and attack the already swollen lining, greater inflammation occurs and as a result, the mucus and bacteria become trapped and cause the sinusitis.  There are many symptoms that a person may experience with sinusitis such as cough, congestion, headache, facial pain and pressure, postnasal drip, and green nasal discharge.  Loss of sense of smell and taste may occur when the infection in chronic and has lasted for twelve weeks or more.

 

            Various treatment forms exist for sinusitis.  One common treatment is a steroid nasal spray.  A steroid nasal spray is used to temporarily ease the swelling and pain in the nasal cavity.  However, a steroid nasal spray requires weeks of use before experiencing and relief.  Also the steroid nasal spray can not efficiently offer relief to a person with sinusitis since its particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection itself.  The same holds true for other forms of nasal spray treatment.
