Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Tachycardia Infection


Sinusitis is a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities, which leads to infection.  This blockage occurs when there is existing inflammation from a cold or allergy.  When bacteria get into the sinus cavities, they attack the swelling of the cavity lining, causing more inflammation.  The cilia can no longer wash out the mucus and bacteria since the opening to the cavity is so inflamed, and the infection begins.  Tachycardia is a rapid beating of the heart.  Tachycardia is related to sick sinus syndrome, which is an abnormal beating of the heart, due to the sinus node.  Symptoms of sinusitis include congestion, post-nasal drip, cough, and green nasal discharge.

Tachycardia is treated usually with heartbeat stabilizing medications or electrical conversion.  Sinusitis has several different treatment forms.  Many physicians will prescribe oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work through the blood stream, however, in the sinus cavity there are not many blood vessels, which limits the amount of antibiotics that travels to the sinusitis infection.  Other times a patient may use nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays only work at the lower nasal passage because of their larger particle size, and cannot get rid of the sinusitis infections.  Often when physicians have tried most forms of treatment unsuccessfully, they will recommend sinus surgery.  Sinus surgery is painful and only clears out some of the infection so it usually comes back and patients may need future surgeries.
