Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sphenoid Sinusitis Infection

Sinusitis is an inflammation condition of the sinus cavities.  Sinusitis starts when a allergy or cold creates swelling of the sinus cavity walls which becomes more inflamed when bacteria enter the cavities and attack the existing swollen lining.  The cilium normally flushes out the bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities, but when this great amount of inflammation takes place, the cilia can no longer function correctly and the infection begins.  The symptoms that can occur with a sinusitis infection are cough, congestion, postnasal drip, green nasal discharge, and facial pain and pressure.  The sphenoid sinuses are located deep in the skull behind the ethmoid sinuses.  When the sinusitis infection exists in the sphenoid sinuses there may be added symptoms such as pain behind the eyes and in the forehead.

There are numerous treatments for a sphenoid sinusitis infection and other forms of sinusitis.  One common form of treatment is nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays have a large particle size, which cannot make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection; therefore it may only offer relief to the lower part of the sinuses.  Another remedy is oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on an infection by traveling through the blood stream to the infected area.  In the sinus cavities though, there are very few blood vessels so it is difficult for an effective amount of the antibiotic to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.

The most effective treatment for a sphenoid sinusitis infection and other types of sinusitis is the Sinus Dynamics program.  Sinus Dynamics uses nebulized antibiotics, anti-fungals, and anti-inflammatories in a 3.2-micron particle size to rapidly fight through the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities to arrive and fight the sinusitis infection.  Since Sinus Dynamics medications are topical there are little to no side effects and they just stay in the blood stream around the sinus cavities.  Sinus Dynamics nebulized therapy is easy, safe, and has a 98% success rate in treatment of patients.
