Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sphenoid Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a condition of the sinus cavities which is caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus.  When there is existing inflammation of the sinus cavity lining, which is usually caused by a cold or allergy, that gets attacked by bacteria, greater inflammation occurs and as a result, the bacteria and mucus can no longer be flushed out by the cilia and the blockage begins which causes the sinusitis.  There are many symptoms of sinusitis which can include cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip.  The sphenoid sinuses are located behind the ethmoid sinuses deep in the skull.  When the sinusitis exists in the sphenoid sinuses, there may be additional symptoms such as pain behind the eyes and in the forehead.

There are many treatment forms for sinusitis.  Frequently a physician will prescribe an oral antibiotic to try and heal the sinusitis.  Antibiotics work on most types of infections by using the blood stream to flow to the infected area.  In the sinus cavities only a small amount of blood vessels exist, therefore it is difficult for an efficient amount of the antibiotic to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.  Also with oral antibiotics there may be side effects such as abdominal pain and birth control may be weakened.  Nasal sprays may also be used though they may only offer relief to the lower part of the sinus cavities since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at opening of the cavities and up to the sinusitis infection itself.

Sinus Dynamics is the latest treatment for sphenoid sinusitis that will clear up the infection and the symptoms that come along with it.  Sinus Dynamics uses nebulized antibiotics, anti-fungals, and anti-inflammatories in a 3.2-micron particle size to rapidly fight through the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity to easily arrive and fight the sinusitis infection.  Since Sinus Dynamics medications are topical, there are little to no side effects and they stay in the blood stream around the sinus cavities.  Sinus Dynamics nebulized therapy is safe, easy, and has a 98% success rate in patients.
