Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Staph and Sinusitis Infection and Complication

Sinusitis is a condition caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus found in the sinus cavities.  The sinusitis usually begins when a person has a cold or allergy which causes swelling of the sinus cavity lining.  When bacteria enter the sinus cavities and attack the swollen lining, greater inflammation occurs which causes the cilia to no longer flush out the bacteria and mucus, and the sinusitis infection begins.  There are several complications that may be experienced with sinusitis such as cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, postnasal drip, and green nasal discharge.  When the sinusitis lasts for twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic and may have added complications such as loss of sense of taste and smell and they may become fatigued.  A staph infection is a bacterial infection which can lead to many other types of infections.  It is believed by some that a staph infection causes 20% of all chronic sinusitis infections.

A staph infection is commonly treated by antibiotics.  A sinusitis infection is also frequently treated with antibiotics.  Antibiotics work on many types of infections by flowing through the blood stream to the infected area.  In the sinus cavities however, there are only a small amount of blood vessels so it is difficult for an effective amount of medication to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.  Another common treatment for sinusitis is nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays are meant to moisten the sinuses and the cilia so that they may function properly.  The problem with nasal sprays however, are that their particle is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection.

Sinus Dynamics is the most innovative technology in the treatment of sinusitis.  The Sinus Dynamics program uses nebulized antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and anti-fungals.  Because of the 3.2 micron size, Sinus Dynamics medications can easily work through the inflammation and make it into the sinus cavities, where the infection lies.  There are also little to no side effects with Sinus Dynamics medications since they are topical, and a very little amount of medication is used.  Sinus Dynamics nebulized therapy is safe and effective with a 98% success rate.
