Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Symptoms of Sinusitis Infections

 

Sinusitis infections are an inflammation condition in the sinus cavities.  When the bacteria attack the inflammation, usually from a cold or allergies, on the sinus cavity lining, more swelling occurs and the bacteria and mucus become trapped, causing the infection.  There are many signs and symptoms of sinusitis infections.  Symptoms of sinusitis infections are postnasal drip, facial pain, cough, green mucus, and congestion.  Often times a symptom will be a sinus headache.  This pain will usually occur around the eyes, forehead and near the cheeks.  Sometimes with a sinusitis infection, a patient will also experience persistent upper respiratory infection and become fatigued when the infection lasts more than twelve weeks.

 

Sinusitis infections have many forms of treatment.  Many physicians will prescribe oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work through the blood stream, however, in the sinus cavity there are not many blood vessels, which limits the amount of antibiotics that travels to sinusitis infections.  Other times a patient may use nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays only work at the lower nasal passage because of their larger particle size, and cannot get rid of the sinusitis infections.  Often when physicians have tried most forms of treatment unsuccessfully, they will recommend sinus surgery.  Sinus surgery is painful and only clears out some of the infection so it usually comes back and patients may need future surgeries.
