Severe Sinus Infections
|
Sinusitis is caused by the inflammation of the nasal passages and the sinus openings. Often following a cold or viral infection, bacteria and debris can enter the passageway and cause more inflammation making it hard for the sinuses to drain fluid as normal. A minor sinus infection normally lasts seven to ten days, and its symptoms include a greenish-yellow discharge, cough, congestion and facial pain. However, when a severe sinus infection (or chronic sinusitis) occurs, it has lasted for twelve weeks or longer. SYMPTOMS The symptoms of chronic sinusitis include:
Other symptoms may include:
CAUSE The most common causes of severe sinus infections range from allergies to facial injuries, such as a deviated septum. Nasal polyps are small, benign teardrop shaped growths that grown on the lining of the nasal passageway. They normally grow near the opening of the sinus cavity, and can cause blockage that leads to a severe sinus infection. Allergic rhinitis, swelling of the lining of the nose due to allergies, also contributes. Other contributing factors include: deviated septums, respiratory tract infections, trauma to the face, and allergic reactions. COMPLICATIONS There are also many complications that can arise due to severe sinus infections. They can trigger an asthma attack, and cause problems with the veins surrounding your nose which puts you at risk for a stroke. Also, if the pressure spreads to your eyes, it could result in reduced vision and at worse a permanent loss of vision.
