Preventing Sinusitis
Preventing Sinusitis can be simple and there are steps to help prevent this condition. To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:
- Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant.
- Gently blowing your nose, block one nostril at a time by blowing through the other to keep nasal discharge thin.
- Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses, allowing mucus to drain.
- Avoiding smoke and pollution. By avoiding nasal irritants you are helping to keep the nasal passageways clear to expel foreign pathogens and fluid.
- Avoiding contact with substances that trigger attacks if you have allergies.
- Allergy testing followed by appropriate allergy treatment may help increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.
- Chronic sinus sufferers might look into purchasing a humidifier as well to keep inflammation to a minimum.
