Acute Sinus Infection Complications

An acute sinus infection is normally diagnosed after a cold or viral flu and will last about 7 to 10 days. While it is relatively harmless, there is a slight chance that it can become quite severe and acute sinus infection complications can be very serious. These complications include:
ORBITAL INFECTION Infection of the eye socket is rare, but very serious. It causes swelling and a droopy eyelid, and is a complication of ethmoid sinusitis. Pressure in this area causes the patient to lose movement of the eye, and in very serious cases can lead to vision loss, sometimes permanent. OSTEOMYELITIS Osteomyelitis is particularly common for adolescent males with acute frontal sinusitis. It is the infection of the facial bones, specifically in the forehead. Symptoms include: headache, fever and Pott’s puffy tumor, which is a soft swelling over the bone (according to umm.edu). BLOOD CLOT The symptoms of blood clots in the front and top of the face are similar to that of orbital infection, and are caused by ethmoid sinusitis. Other symptoms include a fixed and dilated pupil, and although it is rare it can be quite dangerous. BRAIN INFECTION This is by far the most dangerous complication that can arise due to acute sinusitis. Caused by the frontal and sphenoid sinuses, the infection spreads by bacteria to the brain either through the bones or through blood vessels. As a result, it can cause abscesses, meningitis and other life threatening conditions. PREVENTION While acute sinusitis complications can be very serious, with the proper care you should be fine. If your symptoms last longer than 7 to 10 days it is highly recommended that you see your physician as your infection may have progressed. Your physician will be able to prescribe you antibiotics that will help fight the infection. It is very important to take all of the medication that you doctor gives you as well.
