Natural Antibiotics For Sinus Infection

A sinus infection is caused by the blockage of the ostia (opening of the sinuses) by inflamed nasal passageways. Depending on the severity of the infection, it can be treated via home remedies and OTC medications or with doctor prescribed medications and surgery. While they have not been scientifically proven yet, there are several natural antibiotics for sinus infections which can alleviate symptoms and help fight infection.

ALLIUM SATIVUM

Such a fancy word, but what is it? Well it’s garlic, to be precise, and garlic contains allicin which has the broadest range of antimicrobial properties of any compound known. This pretty much means that it’s able to kill parasites, bacteria, fungi and viruses. Never thought the old myth about vampires could have some substance behind it, did you?

There are many ways to administer it as an antibiotic as well:

  • Garlic Carrot Juice: blend 3 cloves of garlic in 6 ounces of carrot juice, and let it sit for 4 to 6 hours.
  • Garlic Wine: Cover crushed or chopped garlic with wine, and let it sit overnight. Wine also has many antioxidant properties as well.

Using the same method as the garlic wine you can also make garlic vinegar and garlic honey. The garlic honey makes a wonderful antibiotic cough syrup. (All recipes courtesy of medherb.com)

STEAM IT UP

Steam therapy is a fantastic way to relieve congestion and administer a natural antibiotic to your sinuses and nasal passages. Tea tree oil has a ton of antibacterial and antifungal properties, while eucalyptus is a great decongestant and it will soothe your sore throat. You can add a few drops of each, as well as a bit of garlic to a pot of boiling water and it makes for a powerful stream treatment. You should be able to feel results in 3 to 5 minutes.

SPICY = DECONGESTANT

Eating spicy foods makes for a great decongestant. Foods such as cayenne pepper, horseradish, wasabi and garlic (again) can be added to foods to thin the mucus membrane and make it more susceptible to drainage.

PREVENTION

There is no real way to prevent a sinus infection from happening. You can be prepared however, so that the symptoms aren’t as severe. As with any infection, your immune system needs to be in top condition in order to fight off any infection. Maintaining a healthy diet, drinking 6 to 10 glasses of water and plenty of exercise is a sure fire way to maintain the health of your immune system and keep you infection free.
