Over The Counter Sinus Infection Medication
|
While sinus infections can be quite difficult to deal with, for most us of it’s easily treatable in the comfort of our own homes. Normally triggered by a cold or the flu, they can be treated with a variety of home remedies and over the counter sinus infection medication. While symptoms can be painful and aggravating, these OTC medications will ease the congestion, pressure and pain while our immune systems work to fight the infection. There are a few different types of over the counter sinus infection medications which can be used to aid in the fight against the infection. They are:
DECONGESTANTS Possibly the most frustrating symptom of a sinus infection, congestion makes it difficult to breathe, contributes to headaches and postnasal drip, and can make sleeping an effort. Decongestants work by restricting the blood flow to the nasal passages, reducing inflammation and allowing drainage. The most commonly used decongestant is Sudafed. Side effects include light headedness, increased heart rate and blood pressure. NASAL SPRAYS Nasal sprays are commonly used for their quick treatment time and quick relief of congestion and pressure. While it provides relief in 1 to 3 minutes, it is very easy to become dependent on it and should only be used for 3 days (very sparingly). The nasal passages can become reliant on the medication to stay open; if this happens and you stop using it the passages will become severely inflamed. This is known as the rebound effect. Afrin is the most popular nasal spray, however as mentioned before use it sparingly and alternate nostrils between dosages. PAIN RELIEVERS Pain relievers are very effective at treating sinus related pain, and have little to no side effects. Tylenol is often used to treat facial pain and swelling, fever and headache associated with sinusitis. Advil Cold & Sinus not only delivers pain relief, but it also includes a decongestant effectively reducing the number of medications being taken by the patient. ANTIHISTAMINES If your sinusitis was triggered by an allergic reaction or allergic rhinitis, an antihistamine such as Benadryl can be used to alleviate symptoms. It very effectively reduces nasal congestion and inflammation, however side effects include drowsiness and light headedness so it should only be used at home when you do not have to drive or operate any kind of machinery. EXPECTORANTS Expectorants are used to thin mucus, so that it can be easily drained and removed from the nasal passages and sinus cavities. It is also very effective in removing phlegm from the respiratory system. Mucinex is a very popular OTC medication which contains Guaifenesin, an expectorant drug. It also works for 12 hours, so only one dosage a day is needed. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION In the cases of acute sinusitis these drugs are all very effective in providing relief from the symptoms of sinusitis. For many people with a more severe case of sinusitis, these will do little to provide relief from the symptoms in addition to fighting the infection. Those with chronic sinusitis will need doctor prescribed antibiotics to fight the infection, and in some serious cases surgery is needed.
