Sinus Headache Medicine
|
A sinus headache is one of the most painful symptoms of a sinus infection. We’ve all felt that dull, throbbing pain that permeates our daily activities and makes it difficult to focus on the most menial of tasks. They’re caused by a build-up of mucus in your sinus cavities due to a blockage in the nasal cavities which causes an intense pressure in your face and forehead. Migraines are commonly misdiagnosed as sinus headaches, the defining difference being that sinus headaches are a symptom of sinusitis. While the most effective method of treatment for a sinus headache is treatment of the infection itself, there is a variety of sinus headache medicine that can help relieve the pain. Here are a few medicinal treatments for sinus headaches: NASAL CORTICOSTEROIDS Due to the fact that sinus headaches are a result of pressure in the sinuses caused by a blockage in the nasal passageways, the main goal is to drain the sinuses and relieve pressure. Corticosteroid nasal sprays will often be prescribed to reduce swelling and promote drainage. You should see results in a few days to a week. OTC DECONGESTANTS Over the counter decongestants can be very effective in reducing congestion, thinning mucus and promoting drainage. The come in either oral or nasal spray form and can be purchased at your local drug store. As a forewarning, nasal spray decongestants should be used with caution. If they are used longer than 3 days, there is a high risk that your nasal passageways could become dependent on the spray to stay open. If the drug is taken away, your nasal passageways will undergo severe congestion (often times worse than before) known as the rebound effect. PRESCRIPTION ANTIBIOTICS If you are unable to find relief from your symptoms with OTC medicine, you doctor can prescribe antibiotics to you if your infection is caused by a bacterial growth. Antifungal medications will be prescribed if it is of a fungal nature or antihistamines if you have allergic rhinitis or severe allergic reactions. If your doctor prescribes you any form of antibiotic make sure to take the entire dosage prescribed. The prescription is specific to your infection, and all of the medication is needed to fight it. If you stop taking medication even if your symptoms have subsided, there is a chance the infection could return stronger than before and resistant to antibiotics. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Sinus headaches are a symptom of sinusitis. The best way to treat your sinus headache symptoms is always to treat the infection itself.
