Sinus Infection Medications

With over 70 million Americans suffering every year from sinus problems, the treatment of sinusitis has advanced greatly. With a variety of OTC medications, prescription medications, topical treatments and natural remedies the treatment of sinus problems has become much easier to deal with. Sinus infection medications help reduce swelling and inflammation, promote drainage and break up congestion; all of which make the symptoms much more bearable while we wait for the immune system to kill the infection.

Which sinus infection medication should take depends on the severity of the infection and the patient’s medical history. Acute sinus infections can normally be handled with the use of OTC medications, while a chronic sinus infection requires the use of doctor prescribed antibiotics. Topical treatments are also available for both forms of sinusitis.

  • OTC Medications: oral pills and nasal spray
  • Prescription Medications: oral antibiotics, antifungal and anti-inflammatory meds; nasal corticosteroid sprays
  • Topical Treatments: aerosolized, atomized and nasal irrigation treatments using compounded medications and solutions

OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS

OTC (over the counter) medications can greatly reduce the impact that the symptoms of sinusitis have on us while our immune systems work to kill the infection.

  • Decongestants – Sudafed is the most popular OTC decongestant used to treat sinusitis. By restricting the blood flow to the nasal passageways, it reduces inflammation allowing for drainage of the sinuses.
  • Nasal sprays – There are two different forms of nasal spray. A saline nasal spray can be used daily to promote moisture within the nasal passages and keep the cilia healthy so that they can move mucus from the sinuses with ease. A decongestant nasal spray, however, works very quickly to break up congestion but there is a high risk of dependency involved. You should only use a nasal spray for 3 days, at the most.
  • Pain relievers – Pain relievers work hard to reduce the pain associated with sinus problems with little to no side effects.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS

When OTC medicines aren’t enough to help you kick the infection, your doctor can prescribe a heavy dose of antibiotics to aid your immune system in killing the infection.

  • Antibiotics – When you have a bacterial infection, an antibiotic such as amoxicillin will be prescribed.
  • Antihistamines – Antihistamines aid those with allergic rhinitis, or an infection that was triggered by an allergic reaction.
  • Antifungal – Fungal infections can be especially difficult to treat, your doctor will prescribe a heavy dose of antifungal medication to you if you’re infection is fungal in nature.
  • Anti-inflammatory – Anti-inflammatory medications will often be prescribed in addition to other medications to aid in reducing swelling and inflammation.

You doctor can also prescribe nasal corticosteroids as an alternative to oral antibiotics. While it may take a few days to a week to see results, they are very effective at eliminating symptoms and providing relief. Common nasal corticosteroids include Nasonex and Flonase.

TOPICAL TREATMENTS

More and more people have been turning to topical treatments to find relief from their sinus problems. They offer little to no side effects, and eliminate the risk of developing resistance to oral antibiotics. There are three popular forms of topical treatment, they are:

  • Aerosolized treatment – Compounded medications (a mixture of antibiotics, antifungal or anti-inflammatory medications depending on the condition) are nebulized to a 1.0 to 3.2 micron sized particle using a nebulizer device which are then “misted” into the nostril. Breaking the particles down to such a small size enables to medication to squeeze through the tightest of spots to reach the deepest pits of the sinus cavities.
  • Atomized treatment – In a similar way, solutions are atomized to a 6.0 to 10.0 micron sized particle, and through positive pressure they are propelled into the deepest pits of the sinuses coating the nasal passageways along the way.
  • Nasal irrigation – Using a nasal irrigator bottle (or neti-pot), a saline solution is rinsed through the nasal and sinus cavities flushing out irritating bacteria and debris. This treatment helps keep the nasal passages moist, and maintains the health of the cilia.
