Sinus Headache Relief

Sinus headaches are a common symptom of sinusitis. As the sinuses fills with mucus due to blockage they create a pressure felt around the eyes, nose and mouth. Sinus headaches can be especially painful and hard to deal with, and they are commonly mistaken for migraines. Sinus headache relief often starts with treating the sinus infection itself.

There are several things you can do to find relief from a sinus headache. A sinus headache is a symptom of swollen and inflamed sinuses, so the idea is to reduce inflammation and promote drainage from the sinuses.

MEDICATION

Take acetaminophen, or ibuprofen to reduce the pain. If one does not work try the other and you may find some relief. There are several different nasal sprays you can take as well to reduce swelling and congestion. Do not take nasal sprays for any longer than 3 days to avoid the rebound effect due to your nasal passageways becoming addicted to the spray.

APPLY WARMTH AND MOISTURE TO THE AFFECTED SINUSES

Warmth and moisture will ease congestion and promote drainage which will ease the painful pressure that you feel. Use a humidifier in an enclosed room and breathe the warm vapors. It will also add moisture to the air. Irritation that causes inflammation is induced by dry nasal passageways, you want them to be as moist as possible at all times.

You can also apply a warm compress over the affected sinuses. Dip a wash cloth in warm to hot water and place it over your face for 3 - 5 minutes while lying down. You should feel the congestion begin to break up, and you will be able to blow your nose and release some discharge from your sinuses.

ELEVATE YOUR HEAD

Whenever you're laying down use a few extra pillows to keep your head elevated. This will help the sinuses drain. If you have consistent sinus headaches you can add six inch blocks beneath your headboard to elevate the whole bed. Getting plenty of rest, even short cat naps, can help significantly.

DRINK A LOT OF FLUIDS

Drink 6 to 10 glasses of water a day, it thins your mucus membrane and makes it more susceptible to drainage. You can also drink sports drinks, fruit juice or vegetable juice. Avoid dairy products and caffeine as they thicken mucus and promote dryness and congestion within the nasal passageways.

Drinking hot tea will also help greatly. Generally you want to drink more hot liquids than cold, chilled liquids. Breathing the steam will help with congestion, and the warmth will help fight the infection. There are a variety of herbal teas you can get that are non-caffeinated as well.
