Sinus Pain Relief

Sinus pain is caused by the inflammation of the sinuses, and the build-up of mucus within them. When the sinuses become blocked by swollen nasal passageways they are unable to drain mucus and a painful infection can develop. Sinus pain relief can be achieved by the treatment of the infection, called sinusitis, itself.

Sinusitis manifests itself in one of two forms; acute sinusitis lasts 7 to 10 days and is relatively easy to treat, while chronic sinusitis lasts up to 12 weeks or longer and can be quite difficult to treat. To feel relief from sinus pain, the drainage of the sinuses is essential. Some ways to relieve sinus pain include:

  • Use of decongestants
  • Steam therapy
  • Nasal irrigation
  • Aerosolized and Atomized therapy

DECONGESTANTS

There are a variety of decongestants that can be used to treat sinus pain, and unless you have chronic sinusitis, they can be quite effective. Decongestants are an over the counter product and they work by decreasing the blood flow to the sinuses, reducing inflammation and promoting drainage. However, it is not recommended to take decongestants if you are on antibiotics, as antibiotics deliver medication through the blood stream.

STEAM THERAPY

The warm steam from a humidifier can help greatly in breaking up congestion, thus allowing the sinuses to drain. Use a humidifier while you sleep, or in an enclosed room and breathe the warm steam for 10 to 15 minutes. You can also take a long, hot shower or breathe steam from a basin of boiling water. You can also add a few drops of eucalyptus oil or peppermint extract as they can help fight the infection as well.

NASAL IRRIGATION

Nasal irrigation is a very effective, cheap and easy method of relieving sinus pain. It works by forcing a saline solution gently through your nasal passageways and sinuses, effectively flushing out bacteria and debris, breaking up congestion and increasing the flow of discharge. You buy a neti-pot or other nasal irrigation kit at your local drug store and mix your own saline solution (warm salt water solution) at home.

AEROSOLIZED AND ATOMIZED THERAPIES

For individuals with more serious sinus problems there are two topical treatments available that are effective, easy and quick and promote quick and lasting relief from sinus pain.

Aerosolized therapy works by nebulizing medications to a particle size of 1.0 to 3.2 microns. The smaller the micron size the better, because it enables the medication to squeeze through the toughest of spaces and reach the deepest pits of sinuses. Unlike oral medications, the medication settles deeply within the sinuses and it treats the infection itself as opposed to surgery.

Atomized therapy works my atomizing solutions to a particle size of 6.0 to 10.0 microns. While the solution isn't broken down to the same size, atomized therapy forces the solution to the deepest parts of the sinuses while coating the nasal walls with solution as well.
