Sinus Pressure Relief Home Remedies

The pressure caused by sinus problems can not only be painful, it can be annoying and a huge strain on your everyday life. Over 70 million people suffer from sinus problems every year, and for some treatment involves heavy doses of antibiotics and, in serious cases, surgery. However, for most people sinus problems last 7 to 10 days and can be treated with a variety of home remedies. Sinus pressure relief home remedies are being used by more people every day and they are easy, quick and cheap.

WHAT CAUSES SINUS PRESSURE

Sinus pressure is caused by the swelling and inflammation of the nasal passageways. When the ostia (opening of the sinuses) become blocked, the sinuses are unable to drain and they become a breeding ground for bacteria, and eventually infection. It's when the sinuses become full of bacteria that the painful feeling of pressure is felt.

HOME REMEDIES

Home remedies for sinus pressure are good for a variety of reasons. They reduce the chance of becoming resistant to oral antibiotics, and there are little to no side effects. Some popular home remedies include:

  • Steaming your nasal passages
  • Nasal irrigation
  • Heat therapy
  • Eating spicy foods
  • OTC Products

STEAM YOUR PASSAGES

Steaming your nasal passages provides them with warmth and moisture, effectively eliminating congestion and restoring drainage. A leading cause of inflammation is irritation due to dry nasal passages, and a humidifier will help keep the air in your home or office moist. Boiling a cup of water, adding a few drops of Eucalyptus oil, and breathing it over a bowl with a towel over your head will not only steam your passages but it the eucalyptus will also help to fight the infection.

NASAL IRRIGATION

Using a neti-pot, or other nasal irrigation kit, can do wonders to relieve pain in your nasal passages and sinuses. While it may be a bit uncomfortable at first, rinsing out your nasal passages with an over the counter saline solution will flush out bacteria, debris and built up mucus.

HEAT THERAPY

Heat will help break up congestion within your sinuses and nasal passages much in the same way the warm vapor of a humidifier will. Place a wash cloth soaked in warm to hot water on your face over the affected sinus while laying down. After 3 to 5 minutes you should feel relief from the pain, and you will be able to blow your nose and release some discharge. Just be careful so as not to burn yourself.

SPICY FOODS

Eating spicy foods will also help thin the mucus, making it easier to drain. Foods with cayenne pepper, horseradish, garlic and ginger are all good for this. Put enough of it in your food so that you can comfortably eat it, or you can put a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water and sip it throughout the day. You will immediately feel you're the congestion breaking up.

OTC MEDICATION

Over the medication medications can be purchased to aid in decongestion and pain. Ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin are all good for relieving pain, while you can purchase Sudafed or Afrin to aid in decongestion. Afrin is a topical nasal spray, and you should not use it for more than 3 days as the nasal passages can become addicted to it and end up becoming even more inflamed if you stop using it.

These are all safe sinus pressure relief home remedies, however if your symptoms persist longer than 7 to 10 days it is recommended that you see your physician for further treatment.
