Sinus Relief Nasal Spray - Benefits and Complications

Treatments for sinusitis, commonly known as sinus infections, can be found in the form of pills, compounded medications, teas and tonics, various home remedies and nasal sprays. Sinus relief nasal spray is a topical form of treatment, and it offers quick relief breaking up congestion and allowing for drainage. There are two types of nasal sprays, and depending on the type they do have some complications that can almost make them not worth the effort.

There are two types of nasal sprays:

  • Medicated decongestant nasal sprays
  • Saline solution nasal sprays

While saline nasal sprays can be used on a daily basis, medicated nasal sprays should be used no longer than 3 days due to addiction.

MEDICATED DECONGESTANT NASAL SPRAYS

Afrin is the most common form of decongestant nasal spray. It can be purchased over the counter at your local drug store. It works by forcing the nasal passageways to return to their normal size. This allows for drainage of the sinuses, and quick relief. Some also contain an expectorant to help the sinuses completely drain all the mucus. Your physician can also prescribe an antihistamine nasal spray if your infection was induced by an allergic reaction. Other commonly prescribed nasal sprays are antibiotic and steroid nasal sprays.

As mentioned before, you should never use a decongestant nasal spray any longer than 3 days. The thin membranes of the nasal passageways can become addicted to it, and when you stop using it they will force themselves shut and you can experience even more inflammation than before. This is called the rebound effect.

SALINE SOLUTION NASAL SPRAYS

Saline solution nasal sprays are much safer and can be used every day. Saline is a salt water mixture. This type of nasal spray can be used daily, and if used at the first signs of swelling it will keep the nasal passages much healthier and moist which could prevent severe congestion and swelling. It will also keep the cilia healthy and moving, which is essential in the drainage of the sinuses.

When using a sinus relief nasal spray an individual should feel their symptoms reside within a week, however if they do not it is highly recommended to see a physician for further treatment. As mentioned before while a saline nasal spray can be used daily, a decongestant nasal spray should never be used more than three.
