Sinusitis Relief

When the sinuses become blocked, they fill with mucus creating the sensation of pressure within the head. These leaves the perfect environment for an infection to form, and when that happens it is referred to as sinusitis. Sinusitis can last anywhere from 7 to 10 days all the way up to 12 weeks or longer, depending on how serious the infection is and the individual diagnosed. You can get sinusitis relief from any number of methods; home remedies, doctor prescribed medications and over the counter medications.

HOME REMEDIES

One of the cheapest and most successful home remedies is a saline nasal rinse with a nasal irrigation kit. It actively flushes out all bacteria and debris, clearing congestion and leaving you breathing easier. A nasal irrigation kit can be purchased at your local drug store. You can purchase a saline nasal spray as well, or you can make it easily at home.

Other methods include steam inhalation from a humidifier or bowl of boiling water (CAREFULLY), elevating your head so as to drain the sinuses while lying down, eating spicy foods which will thin the mucus, and keeping hydrated. Drinking plenty of clear fluids will help keep your nasal passages moist, and will also help thin mucus making it easier to drain.

OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS

There are several over the counter (OTC) medications available to help relieve the pain and pressure of sinusitis. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help with the pain; if one doesn’t work you can just as easily try the other to see which works best.

Decongestants come in either a pill form or in the form of a nasal spray. As a forewarning, you should never use a nasal spray any longer than 3 days to avoid the risk of the rebound effect. You nasal passages can become addicted to the nasal spray, and if you suddenly stop using it you will experience severe inflammation.

DOCTOR PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS

While acute sinusitis can easily be treated at home, if your symptoms persist longer than 7 to 10 days it is highly recommended that you see your physician immediately. You physician will prescribe you a dose of antibiotics, antihistamines and/or anti-inflammatory medications depending on your condition.

Antibiotics assist the body’s immune system to fight the infection, while antihistamines are used in the cases of sinusitis brought on by an allergic reaction. It is very important that you take all of the medication that your doctor prescribes to you as well. If you do not take the entire dosage your body, even if you’re feeling better, the infection can come back stronger than before and resistant to the antibiotic.
