Antibiotic For Sinus Infection

Antibiotics are used to treat infections that are caused by bacteria, or of a bactericidal nature. They not only fight bacteria and keep it from multiplying when the body is weak, but they also help the body rebuild the strength of its immune system. There are several different classes of antibiotics for sinus infections that a doctor will prescribe, depending on what type of bacterial infection that you have.

There are four different types of antibiotics used to treat sinus infections. Your physician will prescribe an antibiotic depending on what type of bacteria caused the infection. The four types of antibiotics are:

  • Penicillin (Narrow-Spectrum)
  • Fluoroquinolones (Broad-Spectrum)
  • Macrolides (Narrow-Spectrum)
  • Cephalosporins (Broad-Spectrum)

Antibiotics are classified as either narrow-spectrum drugs or broad-spectrum drugs. Narrow-spectrum antibiotics work against only a few types of bacteria, while broad-spectrum antibiotics will fight many. It should be noted though, the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics promote antibiotic resistance so narrow-spectrum are prescribed whenever possible. Broad-spectrum are generally prescribed when the bacterial infection is unresponsive to narrow.

1. PENICILLIN

Bacteria works quickly to absorb essential nutrients from our bodies. As bacteria grow they must develop a cell wall to be able to survive, and penicillin works by destroying that cell wall, and interfering with the bacteria's ability to build it.

2. FLUOROQUINOLONES

This is the latest and greatest in the world on antibiotics. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and it works by inhibiting the replication process of bacterial DNA, effectively wiping out the entire colony of bacteria.

3. MACROLIDES

While macrolides do not directly kill the bacteria, they halt the bacteria's ability to create new proteins, thus stopping them from multiplying further than they already have. This allows the body's immune system to produce enough white blood cells and antibodies to destroy the remaining bacteria. Large doses of macrolides will, however, destroy bacteria in addition to halting the reproduction process.

It should be noted that in comparison to the other classes of antibiotics, ENT specialists seem to prefer macrolides over the others due to the fact that they do not have as many side effects.

4. CEPHALOSPORINS

Cephalosporins are a form of penicillin, however they only have a 20% chance of sparking an allergic reaction in those that are allergic to penicillin. It also works in the same ways, by affecting the bacteria's ability to build cell walls.

CLOSING NOTES

If your doctor prescribes you with antibiotics it is VERY important that you take all of the medication prescribed. You should NEVER have any left over. The dosage given is designed to completely fight off infection, and keep it away. If you do not take all of it, it gives the bacteria a chance to come back stronger than before and resistance to the antibiotics you were taking.

While antibiotics are extremely effective in fighting off infection, not everyone finds relief through their use. If you have been suffering through the symptoms of sinusitis and have yet to find the relief you've been looking for, Sinus Dynamics may be able to help.
