Home Remedies For Sinus Congestion

Nasal congestion can be a lingering ailment that can be both annoying and difficult to rid yourself of. While there are several different medications, nasal sprays and surgeries designed to help alleviate the symptoms, there are just as many home remedies for sinus congestion that can help just as much. While they won't help as much in the cases of a sinus infection, they can come in quite handy when you are having trouble going about your daily activities due to nasal congestion.

Home remedies are (for the most part) natural, healthy and easy to administer but you should always consult with your physician before trying these things.

STEAM

A tried and true method of clearing sinus congestion is the wondrous miracle that is stream. When our nasal passages get dry, bacteria and debris will begin to irritate the delicate nasal walls causing inflammation. Breathing steam can help add moisture and encourage the sinuses to open allowing for drainage. You can use a humidifier, or even easier, take a long hot shower. Massaging the sinuses with a bit of oil on your fingers can also help to coax the sinuses open.

EUCALYPTUS OIL

Some people add eucalyptus oil to a pot of boiling water as a form of steam inhalation as well. Eucalyptus helps reduce inflammation, is anti-fungal, anti-viral and antibacterial. Add 3 drops to a boiling pot of water and inhale the steam, the Eucalyptus will not only reduce inflammation but it will also help fight any infection that you may have. You can even make a fancy little vaporizer by adding the boiling eucalyptus mixture to a cup, placing a paper towel over the cup and inhaling the steam.

NASAL IRRIGATION

Nasal irrigation is another great remedy that can help greatly. Using a neti pot, you can rinse out your sinuses with a warm saline solution (salt water mixture) enabling them to open up. You can get a nasal irrigation kit at your local drug store, and mix the saline solution at home.

There are many home remedies that can help with sinus congestion, and these are just a few. It goes without saying that you should continue to drink plenty of fluids (6 to 10 glasses a day), and your mother wasn't kidding when she said that chicken soup is good for the soul (or the sinuses in this case, hint hint).

If these you try these remedies and they fail to deliver the relief you are seeking you may consider consulting with your physician or trying over the counter medications. It is important to treat any infections that you may have before they progress and get worse.

While home remedies for sinus congestion may fall short in some cases, Sinus Dynamics offers three different types of treatments to help those suffering with sinusitis symptoms, one being the Active Sinus Nasal Saline Rinse Kit.
