Remedies For Sinus Infection - Ancient Treatments

How did they treat sinus infections a thousand years ago?

Apparently the practice of drinking plenty of fluids is the backbone of most sinus infections and colds dating back hundreds of years. However, the solutions and tinctures given to the infirm are not too different when the compounds are compared. However, dosage, application method and potency clearly could not be exact leaving room for a huge margin of error. Here are some interesting home remedies used back during biblical times:

  • Myrrh - mentioned in the Bible and used extensively in the Middle East for catarrhal and sinus problems. Myrrh is used as a gargle and is an herb known for its effectiveness in fighting against colds, sore throats and coughs. Myrrh has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, also used as a treatment for gum disease.
  • Garlic and fresh warm milk - used to shorten the duration of a cold or sinus infection. Garlic has an active compound referred to as 'allicin' which has an expectorant in it. Garlic is recognized for its antioxidant properties as well. Crush a clove of garlic in a cup of warm milk. (Yuck!)
  • Sage - used for a sore throat - mixed with a bit of Alum 1/2 tea dried Sage, a pinch of Alum mixed in a warm 6 oz glass of water. Gargle several times every few hours.
  • Mustard plaster - used to help relieve chest congestion - take 1 tbsp of dry mustard, 1/4 cup flour lukewarm water. Mix mustard and flour in a bowl. Add enough water to make a paste. Spread mustard plaster on a piece of fabric e.g. muslin that can cover the chest area. Then cover that fabric with another piece of muslin. Sit with remedy on the chest for 5 minutes and check for signs of allergic reaction. Remove if skin is showing hives or deep redness. Skin will be a little pink. Leave on 1/2 hour; remove plaster with tepid water.
  • Homemade cough syrup - boil a lemon with its skin on for about 8 minutes. Cut the lemon in two parts and squeeze the juice with the use of a squeezer. Add the lemon juice to a glass. Mix in two tablespoonfuls of glycerin. Stir lemon juice and glycerin together. Add 1 tbsp of honey.

Homeopathic remedies definitely can be helpful however, there is a reason people turn to the technological advances in medicine; shorten the duration of the infection and prevent further medical complications. Chicken soup is always a safe bet, by the way, along with a strong dose of Vitamin C.
