Bacterial Sinus Infection Symptoms
|
A bacterial sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is usually observed after a viral infection such as a common cold or flu. It is caused when the nasal passageways swell (normally after a cold or flu) closing off the openings of the sinuses, which in turn fill with mucus and become a breeding ground for bacteria. They are often confused with other types of viral infections because of their similarity to each other; however, if the symptoms persist for a longer time there can be a much higher risk of a sinus infection. There are several bacterial sinus infection symptoms, and in this article we will be taking a look at those different symptoms. Let's take a look at the symptoms associated with a bacterial sinus infection:
DOUBLE SICKENING One of the first signs, or symptoms, is what doctors call double sickening. This means that the patient starts to feel better before beginning to get sick again. If the symptoms of your cold have started to get worse five to seven days after the initial start of the cold, you may be starting to exhibit bacterial sinus infection symptoms. FACIAL PRESSURE/NASAL DISCHARGE In addition to “double sickening” the patient will feel intense facial pressure due to the build-up of pressure in the frontal sinuses (the sinuses in your forehead) and the maxillary sinuses (the sinuses in your cheeks). Nasal discharge is generally present with any cold or flu, however with a sinus infection it will be thicker and have a greenish-yellow color. OTHER SYMPTOMS Many people will experience a loss of smell in addition to halitosis, or bad breath, and in some cases a loss of taste. Related to the loss of taste, the pressure from the build-up of mucus in the maxillary sinuses will cause the teeth in the upper jaw to hurt. The most common symptoms are those that are the easiest to see, or feel in this case: a fever that lasts longer than seven to ten days, severe headaches and ear pain. A persistent cough is also regularly experienced as there is a nasal drip as mucus drains from the nasal passageways and from the frontal sinuses. There are many bacterial sinus infection symptoms, and if you know what to look for it could definitely save you a few days of recovery time, however, it is no substitute for going to the doctor and receiving the medical care that you need.
