Serious Sinus Infection

A sinus infection is often times one of the most discomforting illnesses that someone can experience. While a normal sinus infection lasts on average seven to ten days, if it is left unattended a serious sinus infection can develop often lasting up to eight to ten weeks. When a serious sinus infection develops, it is important to seek immediate consultation from a doctor or physician as it could lead to more serious complications and in some instances death.

CAUSE

Sinus infections are caused when the lining of the nasal passageways becomes inflamed, normally due to a viral infection or a cold. The swelling of the passageways can cause a blockage, making the draining of normal fluids from the sinuses difficult. If the fluid is unable to drain, it accumulates in the sinuses over time and bacteria or fungi will begin to grow in it. These bacterial/fungal deposits can cause more pain and swelling as they develop into an infection with a chance of getting worse over time and even becoming chronic. While minor sinus infections are relatively short lived, if they go untreated they can develop into a serious sinus infection which will in turn lead to potentially serious problems.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of a serious sinus infection are normally relatively easy to recognize in comparison to a minor sinus infection. Serious sinus infections start off with minor sinusitis. If treatment is not obtained, the symptoms may progress to:

  • Substantially painful headaches
  • Eye infections
  • Increased mucus from nasal passageways and eyes
  • Swelling around eyes/eyelids
  • Loss of sense of taste/smell

In severe cases patients will experience changes in normal consciousness, including personality changes, convulsions and seizures.

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

There are precautions you can take to avoid developing a serious sinus infection, and they are a mixture of taking care of yourself, and taking doctor prescribed medications. Drinking a lot of fluids, using a humidifier and drinking hot tea can also help loosen the mucus membrane allowing for easier breathing.
