Sinus Problems Symptoms

The sinuses are air filled pockets within the bones in the face. We have four sets of sinuses, which are the frontal (in our forehead), the maxillary (in our cheeks), the ethmoid (either side of our nose) and the sphenoid (behind our eyes). When the sinuses get blocked, they are unable to drain fluids and they become a breeding ground for bacteria which can later lead to an infection. In this article we are going to take a look at the different sinus problem symptoms and how to be able to diagnose which problem is currently effecting us.

Sinus problems can be experienced as a result of:

  • A cold
  • Flu
  • Seasonal allergies
  • A sinus infection/sinusitis

It is important to understand the symptoms of each so that you will know what you are suffering from, and will be able to properly treat it. While the differences are small, there are differences between the three and we will take a look at each.

We are all familiar with the feelings associated with a common cold or the flu. The symptoms for a common cold are often quite mild; the flu however can be a bit more serious.

COMMON COLD

  • Mild aches and pain
  • Stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Moderate cough
  • Sinus Congestion
  • Mild Fatigue

Sneezing

FLU

  • High fever (100 - 102ºF)
  • Prominent Headache
  • Moderate aches and pain
  • Fatigue/Exhaustion
  • Severe Cough
  • Can lead to more serious conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia

Allergies, much like the common cold and the flu, can affect the sinuses and even lead to sinus infection if they get bad enough. The symptoms of allergies are very different, but they can be just as bothersome in their own way. The symptoms of allergies include:

  • Runny nose
  • Excessive sneezing
  • Itchy nose/watery eyes
  • Sore throat
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Postnasal drips
  • Loss of taste/smell
  • Excessive coughing

These symptoms can often lead the development of a sinusitis, or a sinus infection. Sinus infections are caused when the opening to the sinus cavities become inflamed and close, making it difficult for the sinuses to drain. As the fluid accumulates, bacteria begin to grow and the risk for an infection goes up. Allergies or an allergic reaction, much like a cold or a viral infection, irritate the inner lining of the nasal passageways which in turn causes them to inflame sparking a sinus infection. The symptoms of a sinus infection are:

  • Nasal/chest congestion
  • Headaches
  • Postnasal drip
  • Pressure around the cheeks, nose and eyes
  • Fatigue

If a sinus infection goes without treatment, it can progress and become much more serious leading to irritability and mood swings, insomnia, disorientation and in serious cases it can lead to the loss of vision and spread to other parts of the body.

While each of these sinus problems can be a burden and take their toll, there are treatment options available specific to each one. For a common cold or flu your doctor may prescribe a heavy dose of antibiotics. For allergies antihistamines are normally prescribed, and for a sinus infection your doctor could prescribe a compounded medication (meaning a combination of several medications).
