Sinus Allergy Treatment

Why do allergies cause sinusitis?

An allergy is an immune response and a hypersensitivity disorder that results in an inflammatory response activating white blood cells. Inflammation in the sinus cavities can cause headaches due to allergies. When a person has an allergy there is the normal inflammation that takes place in the sinus cavity as well as mucus build up. However, when there is a sinusitis allergy infection the walls of the sinus cavity and the openings into the sinuses become so swollen that bacteria is trapped inside the sinuses causing an infection. Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses that usually is caused by a blockage in the sinus cavity by foreign debris. The result of having a blockage of bacteria, fungi or virus is excess mucus production in the sinus cavities and inflammation due to the pathogens attacking the sinus cavity openings. When the sinus cavity openings are attacked by bacteria this leads to a more serious sinus infection. Sinusitis develops typically when there is existing inflammation from a cold or allergy.

Sinusitis allergies can develop from exposure to allergens which later develop into a sinusitis infection. An allergy is the production of histamine due to the presence of an allergen. Excess mucus production is the result of histamine which is seen as a hyperactivity response. During a sinusitis infection, the cilia which are small hairs in the nasal passageways cannot perform their function of removing the debris that is blocked inside the sinus cavity. There are a myriad of symptoms that take place with a sinusitis infection. Common symptoms of a sinusitis allergy infection include: cough, upper respiratory congestion, postnasal drip, nasal discharge, fever, facial pain and facial pressure.

Are there differences in treating a sinusitis allergy infection with a non-allergic case of sinusitis?

There isn’t a definite answer. Sinusitis Infections that are due to an allergy will likely utilize an antihistamine such as Benadryl or Sudafed to assist with reducing excess mucus that develops in the sinus passages and will provide symptom relief. However, non-allergic sinus infections will also benefit from an antihistamine as well. Histamine causes nasal mucus production as it increases vascular permeability, resulting in fluid escaping from the capillaries into the tissues. Antihistamines neutralize histamine which is helpful in reducing excess mucus from allergic reactions that often trigger sinusitis.

The common denominator in the variety of sinus infections e.g. allergic, viral, bacterial and fungal is that a physician is inclined to treat most sinusitis infections with an oral antibiotic. Strangely, oral antibiotics are statistically proven to be one of the least effective methods of treating sinusitis while it is also known to affect approximately 35 million people in the United States alone. As technology has increased new methods have been introduced that now challenge the “old school” approach to treating sinus infections with oral antibiotics.

  • Oral antibiotics - fail to treat sinus infections due to the lack of blood vessels in the sinus cavity to carry the medication to the infected site. In short, it is difficult to effectively treat any sinusitis infection with oral medication.
  • Nasal sprays – flush the lower sinus regions and are unable to remove allergens in the upper sinus area which are harder to reach. Nasal sprays are typically obtained over the counter or prescribed by a physician. The large particle size of the nasal spray delivered into the sinus cavity cannot reach the site of inflammation or infection and thereby it cannot reduce the inflammation at the sinus cavity openings nor remove the pathogens caught inside the upper sinus cavities.
