Sinus Congestion Treatment

Sinus congestion can be caused by any number of things, but one thing is known for certain, it is not always easy to treat. Depending on the cause of the congestion, antibiotics or antifungal medications could be prescribed or even surgery could be required to fix the problem. While there are many different sinus congestion treatments currently available, the proper treatment for the patient depends on the patient’s condition and how severe their symptoms are.

Sinus congestion is caused when the sinuses become inflamed due to irritation from bacteria and other debris within the nasal passageways. This can be caused by any number of things such as allergies, a cold or viral infection, a deviated septum and can even be triggered by an asthma attack. The treatment depends on what caused the initial infection and how serious the infection is itself.

TREATING CONGESTION IN ACUTE SINUSITIS

The most common form of infection is acute sinusitis, meaning that it will only last about 7 to 10 days. The treatment involved with acute sinusitis is quite easy and most times the symptoms can be relieved with a variety of home remedies such as:

  • Warm compresses over the infected sinuses
  • Using a humidifier at night during sleep
  • Using over the counter medications
  • Nasal sprays
  • Anti-inflammatory/anti-histamine (if allergic rhinitis) medications
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Getting plenty of bed rest

Using warm compresses and a humidifier will help loosen the mucus and open the nasal passageways enough to cause a bit of drainage, this will help to pressure. The key is keeping the nasal passageways moist as the dry passages lend towards irritation and inflammation. Drinking plenty of water (6 – 10 glasses a day) will also help thin the congestion and make it easier to drain.

TREATING CONGESTION IN CHRONIC SINUSITIS

Many times if an acute sinus infection is left untreated it can progress into a chronic sinus infection, which is much more difficult to treat. As with acute sinusitis, nasal congestion is a symptom of chronic sinusitis only it is much more severe in this case, making it harder for medication to reach the sinuses and fight the infection. Common treatments include:

  • Physician prescribed medications (antibiotics, antifungal or anti-inflammatory medications)
  • Surgery (FESS or balloon sinuplasty)
  • Aerosolized treatment
  • Atomized treatment

The first line of defense in treating the congestion in a chronic sinus infection is the doctor will prescribe a mixture of antibiotic, antifungal or anti-inflammatory medications that will be taken for a week to 2 weeks. However oral medications travel through the blood stream and due to the lack of blood flow to the sinuses the medication has trouble reaching the site of the infection. A common side-effect of oral medications is that many patients build resistance to the medications making them useless in the long run.

If oral medications are unsuccessful their prescribing physician will many times refer the patient to an Ear Nose and Throat doctor for surgery. While surgery is immediately successful in treating the congestion (it literally flushes the sinuses out), the infection is rarely treated leaving the patient susceptible to more congestion in a few short weeks.

AEROSOLIZED AND ATOMIZED TREATMENTS

The most successful from of sinus congestion treatment is that of aerosolized and atomized therapy. They are topical treatments, dispensed into the nasal and sinus cavities using drug delivery devices. Depending on the severity of the congestion, patients have been able to find relief with either aerosolized or atomized therapy in quick daily treatments, and at little to no cost.

Aerosolized treatment breaks down compounded medications (a combination of antibiotic, antifungal and/or anti-inflammatory medications) to a particle size of 1.0 to 3.2 microns, meaning that it is able to deliver medication through the tightest of congestion into the sinuses, where it is able to fight the infection at the source.

Atomized therapy propels solutions straight to the sinuses using positive pressure. While it may not break down solution to the same micron size (6.0 to 10.0 micron sized particles), it coats the walls of the nasal and sinus cavities as it travels through the nasal passageways.
