Sinus Migraine Treatment

We have all suffered from a dulling, painful headache that makes us sensitive to light, sound and even movement that we call a sinus migraine. More often than not though, we are confusing a sinus migraine with an ordinary migraine. There are ways to tell the difference, and in this article we are going to look at those differences as well as proper sinus migraine treatment.

According to the American Headache Society (http://www.achenet.org/) 9 out of 10 self diagnosed sinus migraines turn out to be regular migraines.

How do you tell the difference between a migraine and a sinus migraine?

The only true way to know if you have a sinus migraine is if you have a sinus infection, or sinusitis. Sinusitis is an infection of the sinuses, in which the nasal passageways become inflamed making it difficult for the sinuses to drain. This allows for the build-up of mucus (which causes the feeling of intense pressure around the cheeks, eyes and nose) in which bacteria begins growing causing an infection.

How do you treat a sinus migraine?

The best way to treat a sinus migraine is to go directly to the source and fight the infection itself. There are many ways to treat a sinus infection all depending on the cause of the infection itself. Sinusitis can be brought on by a number of different causes, ranging from a cold or viral infection to allergies or an asthma attack. You can treat a sinus infection with a variety of home remedies, some of them include:

  • Using a humidifier during sleep
  • Nasal irrigation
  • Using OTC medications
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Getting plenty of bed rest

HUMIDIFIERS

As bacteria and other debris get caught in our sinus cavities they begin to dry out the nasal passageways, which causes irritation and later inflammation. Using a humidifier during sleep can help moisturize the passageways, thinning mucus and relieving congestion and pressure. If you do not have access to a humidifier, taking long hot showers can help as well as breathing steam from a boiling pot of water (carefully, of course).

NASAL IRRIGATION

Another way to keep the passageways moist is through the use of nasal irrigation. This is the act of flushing a medicated saline mixture through your nasal passages, flushing out bacteria and other debris that are causing irritation. You can purchase a nasal irrigator kit at your local drug store, and even make the saline mixture at home.

OVER THE COUNTER TREATMENT

While these methods help keep the nasal passages moist, they do not actively fight the infection itself. Most cases of sinusitis can be fought with over the counter medications that can be purchased at your local drugstore. A mixture of decongestants and antihistamines in the form of nasal sprays and pills can help relieve symptoms while your body naturally fights the infection. However, if your symptoms persist longer than seven to ten days it is recommended to consult your doctor about prescribing a dose of antibiotics to assist your body in fighting the infection.

Sinus migraines can be extremely difficult to deal with in everyday life, but with the proper knowledge you can treat them and get on with your daily life in a timely manner. It is important to know the difference between a migraine and sinus migraine, and hopefully now you will be able to find relief from your symptoms.
