Sinus Pressure Treatment
|
Sinus pressure is caused by nasal congestion and swelling of the nasal passageways. As the nasal passages begin to swell, they block the ostia (opening of the sinuses) making it difficult for the sinuses to drain. As mucus accumulates within the sinuses the feeling of pressure is felt around the eyes, nose or mouth. For many people it can be very difficult to deal with, but there are many forms of sinus pressure treatment that make it a little more bearable while trying to function during a sinus infection. Since sinus pressure is a symptom of sinusitis, the best way to treat it is by treating the infection itself. However, there are several ways that you can relieve the symptoms of sinus pressure. Some home remedies include:
Using a warm humidifier at night can help ease congestion and thin mucus. Inflammation is largely caused by dry nasal passageways and steam can help add moisture making the mucus easier to flow as well. If you are unable to use a humidifier taking long showers can also help, in addition to breathing steam over a boiling pot of water. Some people add Echinacea and other herbs to the water as well. Nasal irrigation is a great way to flush out congestion and other bacteria and debris that is causing irritation in your nasal passages. Flushing a saline mixture through your nasal passageways will also help thin mucus and make drainage much easier. OVER THE COUNTER TREATMENT Over the counter medications can definitely help ease sinus pressure and also help fight the sinus infection itself. A nasal decongestant (can be purchase in a nasal spray or pill form) will inhibit blood flow to sinuses which will decrease inflammation causing the sinuses to drain. Antihistamines also work well if you’re congestion is allergy related. If you decide to use nasal sprays such as Afrin, only use them for three to five days as they can break down the delicate lining of the nasal passages causing increased inflammation, also known as “the rebound effect”. ANTIBIOTICS AND SURGERY In severe cases of sinusitis, sometimes antibiotics or surgery are needed to help relieve sinus pressure. If these home remedies do not work, and your symptoms persist it is recommended to see your physician immediately. They will be able to prescribe you a heavy dose of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications that will help ease inflammation and make drainage much easier. However, if medication does not work the physician can refer the patient to an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat doctor) who can perform surgery to cause immediate drainage of the sinuses.
